The mark we carry

The anonymous metch collective.

When the artists remain anonymous, the mark has to carry a world without borrowing the weight of a name.

A shared language

We make metch as a collective and keep our individual identities outside the work. That choice gives an emblem a particular responsibility. It has to be more than a shortcut to a person's reputation. It needs a character you can recognise through the work itself. The harvest scene gives us that possibility. A seated figure, grapes and a vessel bring a small human world into the collection. The image has things to look at before it has anything to declare. We can return to it in different pieces and find a different emphasis each time. On Emblem, the scene moves to the chest.

Our interest in Europe as a source of inspiration includes the way images remain present in daily life. A small figure on an object can become familiar without losing all of its detail. You recognise the outline first, then rediscover what is inside it. We want the harvest mark to develop that kind of relationship with someone who wears metch. It can become a sign of belonging while remaining an image worth looking at. The person wearing the tee should be able to meet it as a drawing before being asked to read it as a brand.

White beside navy

The white centre and navy shoulder panels give the emblem a setting of its own. The colour at the shoulders changes the outline of the tee, so that the chest becomes a deliberate place for the image. There is a visual conversation between the large arrangement and the small mark inside it. From a distance, the panels are the clearest gesture. Closer, the multicolour harvest scene begins to matter more. We like a design that offers those different distances of attention. It can be understood quickly and still have something left for the person who takes another look.

The back neckline carries a handwritten mark. Its scale and placement give the reverse a separate voice. We think of the front as the image you meet and the back as a small trace left by a person. Together, they make the piece feel inhabited without putting a named personality at its centre. The crew neck and short sleeves keep the overall form familiar. Within that familiar form, the shoulder panels, the scene and the handwriting create their own relationships. The interest lies in how they sit together. Each is more specific because the others are there.

Let the image speak

The design questions behind Emblem concern recognition and closeness. A mark can become easy to recognise while growing less interesting to look at. We want to keep both experiences alive. The little scene gives the eye a place to rest and then a reason to continue moving. The panels give it a larger structure. The handwriting leaves something more personal on the reverse. When we talk about developing a piece, this is the kind of relationship we mean: the work of finding a clear role for each element and noticing when one begins to speak over another.

Emblem carries the collective's choice about authorship into a garment. We do not need to tell you who drew which line for the image to have a life of its own. What matters is whether the piece holds your attention and begins to mean something in the context of your life. A journey, a place or a person can gather around a mark after you start wearing it. Its meaning can become more specific with time. We give you the figure and its small world. You give it somewhere to belong.
